The Fifth Annual Western Division American Fisheries Society Student Colloquium
In conjunction with the WDAFS Annual Meeting in Mazatlan
Annual meeting April 7-11
The student colloquium provides a special opportunity for students - it is planned for and by students. You may remember two years ago the event was held at University of Montana. Students give presentations to a student-only audience, giving them a chance to hone their presentation skills and receive feedback from their peers. Additionally, a special activity will be planned just for students to promote fisheries education and professional development. In addition to the colloquium, the WDAFS meeting provides an incredible opportunity for students to interact with fisheries professionals. There are structured student-professional social mixers as well as chances for students to pass their CV or resume on to perspective employers and interact with fisheries professionals.
Because of the expense of attending this event, we will be working hard to raise funds and acquire travel grants through local organizations in order to send a couple of active UM AFS members to this very special event. Watch this website for more information. Additionally, WDAFS offers travel grants. More information is available here. They typically accept applications for these grants in November and December and announce grantees in February. (Hint: Being active in your local AFS unit, joining the parent organization at $20 student rate, and/or presenting a poster or oral presenation are good ways to increase your odds for consideration.)
