Personal Summary:

I have been a member of the faculty of the University of Montana since 1993. I was Director of the UM Wilderness Institute for seven years and Chaired the Department of Society and Conservation for four years. I teach upper division courses in Enviroumental Interpretation and Managing Tourist and Visitor Behavior.  My graduate courses are in Advanced Protected Area Management.   I have conducted numerous studies for the National Park Service associated with the Visitor Experience and Resource Protection Program and have a continued interest in understanding and monitoring the use of National Parks. My current research projectes are on the effects of mass transportation on national parks (specifically related to climate change) and the monitoring of visitor perceptions of soundscape resources.  I have been working since 1998 on a cooperative program in Protected Area Management with the University of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa and am in the process of expanding that relatrionship to include the University of Namibia and the Copperbelt University in Zambia.  I have been  co-leader of the International Seminar on Protected Area Management hosted by the University of Montana for nine years, and am on the executive committee of the Consortium on Protected Area Management (CIPAM).

Master of Science. West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV. 1990. Recreation and Park Management. Emphasis in public administration, budgeting and research methodologies.

Bachelor of Science. University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN. 1986. Recreation, Park and Leisure Studies. Emphasis in outdoor education and child psychology.
