Researchers from Korea Forest Research Institute visit UM

Since 2011, the CFC has had a research agreement with the Korea Forest Research Institute to cooperate in teaching and research. In September, the assistant general director of KFRI, a research scientist from KFRI, and two faculty members from Kandwon National University visited the CFC and the USFS Fire Sciences Laboratory in Missoula. The group also visited the Missoula Fire Sciences Laboratory, part of the USFS Rocky Mountain Research Station, and the RMRS's forest sciences lab in Moscow, Idaho as well as Oregon State University.

CFC Associate Professor of Forest Operations Woodam Chung is conducting research funded by KFRI to estimate the expected loss of landscapes in Korea due to forest fires. Chung is developing a methodology to estimate expected loss values of a landscape due to forest fires based on burn probability and other geospatial attributes of the rasterized landscape. He is also modelling tree-level fuel connectivity using a fine scale physics-based fire behavior model in order to develop effective thinning prescriptions for reducing crown fire potential.
