The American Fisheries Society UM student subunit is an ideal way to get involved, improve your college experience, advance your career goals, and have fun. The organization is open to all students at the university. Being a subunit of the American Fisheries Society provides students with a way to learn more about local fisheries issues, make contacts with professionals, learn about current internships and job announcements, as well as get involved in fishing trips, river clean-up trips, and local stream restoration events.
This year there will be a variety of exciting activities from river cleanup float trips, restoration projects, outreach activities, state fisheries conventions, as well as getting together as a group for fishing, fly-tying, and telling fish stories. We will have biweekly meetings with speakers, organizing upcoming activities, and discussing local issues in fisheries.
The American Fisheries Society UM Student Chapter has members that range from Wildlife Biology majors who are interested in becoming fisheries professionals to journalism majors who are interested in the resource and enjoy fishing.
It is easy, come to an upcoming meeting or contact an officer! Meetings are every other Thursday at 6:00pm in FOR 305. The schedule is located here, and meetings are announced via our listserv and on Facebook. For more information, email us at umfisheries@gmail.com and get on the email list to receive job announcements and updates about group activities.
You can put in as much time as your schedule allows. But the more involved you are, the more you'll benefit from your membership.
It is necessary to get experience in the profession either as an intern or through seasonal jobs. First check out the university resume center, then have a peer or your academic advisor read it over. http://www.umt.edu/career/resumes/resume.html#intro
