Six field technicians needed!

Help with a migratory songbird study in eastern Montana from late April/early May through mid to late-July. The study will investigate how migratory songbird assemblages in prairie/sagebrush ecosystems respond to grazing systems. The study is a collaborative effort and designed to assess the effectiveness of migratory songbirds as a tool for monitoring landscape changes in prairie/sagebrush ecosystems. Data collection will consist of walking avian transect surveys in the early morning and nest searches and monitoring in the afternoon.

Job Description Major duties for all technicians include identifying prairie and sagebrush songbirds by sight and sound; identifying songbird nests and eggs; navigating with GPS units; entering and proofing data; and communicating with project collaborators and other researchers in the area. Good organizational skills, legible handwriting, the ability to work independently and within a team, and a willingness to travel and work an unusual and variable schedule in prairie/sagebrush habitats are essential.

Qualifications Applicants should have or are pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology, biology, ecology, or a related field. Experience identifying birds by sight and song is preferred, especially in prairie and/or sagebrush systems. Experience working with private landowners is highly desired. Strong organizational and data recording skills are required. Applicants must be willing to work a flexible schedule, should be in good physical condition, and able to walk long distances on an arid landscape with varying temperatures. Valid driver’s license and current CPR and first aid certification required.

Salary $1,600 - $2,100/month (dependent on experience). Housing is provided.
