"Building Integrated Conservation Education and Practice in Bhutan"
Bolle Center Director, Dr. Jill Belsky, completes 3 year MacArthur Foundation Grant with UM colleague Dr. Stephen Siebert. The grant provided financial resources for the training and development of faculty associated with Bhutan's Ugyen Wangchuk Institute for Conservation and Environment (UWICE), and with the Royal Government of Bhutan's Nature Conservation Division (2008-2011). Professors Belsky and Siebert also were the first scholars to received grants under the Fulbright Foundation's Senior Specialist Programs to support this work (fall 2010). The project resulted in three Master's degrees for two UWICE Bhutanese foresters and RGoB/NCD ecotourist specialist, including masters' theses on these topics which are now informing scholarship and program development in the country. The two UWICE Bhutanese foresters are leaders in developing the new department on "Socio-Economics and Policy" at UWICE .
