University of Montana Archeological Field School Locates the Historic Town of Cinnabar in Yellowstone National Park

On June 25-July 27, The University of Montana archeological field school in Yellowstone National Park discovered the lost town of Cinnabar, Montana. During the course of the 5-week field school – which was funded by the NPS RM-CESU – the team excavated the remnants of three buildings associated with Cinnabar, which was the Northern Pacific train stop for Yellowstone National Park between 1883 and 1903. Doug MacDonald, field school director, produced three newsletters on the MYAP project, which include photographs of some of the archeological artifacts discovered the field work.

  • Project approval is noncompetitive between partners.
  • All projects must have direct relevance to the RM-CESU mission.
  • Projects are collaborative between partners, not contractual.
  • Partner institutions agree to a 17.5% overhead.
  • Project funding may come from agencies or institutions.
  • Project funds may be transferred between institutions or between an agency and an institution, but not directly between agencies. Mechanisms other than the CESU agreement are available for transferring funds between agencies
