The Society of American Foresters (SAF) is the national scientific and educational organization representing the forestry profession in the United States. Founded in 1900 by Gifford Pinchot, it is the largest professional Society for foresters in the world.
The Montana SAF has 300 members from all walks of forestry. Our members include educators, students, research scientists, economists, consultants and practitioners in public and private settings across Montana. We have four chapters that are located in uniquely forested regions of our state. Our Student Chapter is based in Missoula at the University of Montana’s College of Forestry and Conservation.
The Montana SAF is dedicated to advance the science, education, technology and practice of forestry; and, to use the knowledge, skills, and conservation ethic of the profession to ensure the continued health and use of forest ecosystems and the present and future use of forest resources to benefit society.
Citizen of the Year Award was given to Bob Harrington for his outstanding work in promoting forestry, public education and outreach, and active service to SAF. Bob is the MT DNRC State Forester.
Field Forester of the Year Award was given to Jared Richardson for his dedication to active forest management using, scientific methods and adaptive management strategies. Jared is a forester with Northwest Management Inc, and is based in Helena.
