Agenda

The 2018 Technical Meeting will provide a forum for presentations and discussion of research related to recent INGY investments in plantation taper and stem density modeling, tree biomass estimators, geospatial modeling of site productivity and maximum stocking, climate-coupled growth projection, and precommercial thinning response. This year's agenda includes:

  • A special session on Precommercial Thinning Impacts & Outcomes moderated by Dr. Christopher Keyes, Professor of Silviculture (University of Montana) and featuring invited presentations by:
    - Jim Stewart, Natural Resources Canada, Canadian Wood Fiber Center
"Long-term effects of precommercial thinning in lodgepole pine: Growth & yield, and wood properties"
    - Russell Graham, USDA Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station
"50 year development of ponderosa pine samplings (4 in) and poles (6 in) using 6 different thinning regimes (growing stock levels) in the Black Hills"
    - Mark Kimsey, University of Idaho, Intermountain Forestry Cooperative
"The response of light, water, and nutrient availability to precommecial thinning in dry inland Douglas-fir forests"
    - Terrie Jain, USDA Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station
"Crop tree selection: An alternative for releasing western white pine saplings in northern Rocky Mountain even-aged plantations"
  • Presentations of recent and ongoing research concerning
    • Modeling landscape forest productivity and stocking potential across the Pacific Northwest
      Jarred Saralecos, Univ Montana
    • Utility and limitations of 3PG for predicting decadal diameter growth across the Inland Empire
      Dave Affleck, Univ Montana
    • Volume and taper comparison of north Idaho Douglas-fir: Natural forest from 1975 versus secondary plantation in 2017
Tom Baribault, Mason, Bruce, & Girard
    • Estimating regeneration of burned forest areas
      George Gaines, Univ Montana
