Counting trees at Lubrecht

A team of student forest technicians are spending their summer inventorying forest characteristics at Lubrecht. In 2010, we put in a set of Resource Inventory Plots (RIPs) to measure how forests change over time. During this summer's re-measure, the crew is counting downed woody fuels, characterizing understory vegetation, counting seedlings and saplings, and measuring large trees. They're also collecting data on mountain pine beetle and other disturbances as well as noxious weeds.

Crew leader Jenni Smith is a graduate student working with undergraduates Mikaela Conway, Nicholas Popejoy, and Drew Williams. With the data they collect, the college can plan for long-term management of Lubrecht Forest.
