Aleks left for a U.S. Forest Service job in Alaska two days after UM's graduation with a degree in resource conservation. She worked in Thorne Bay on the recreation crew building trails and maintaining cabins in the temperate rainforest of Southeast Alaska. With almost 30 cabins on different islands reaching the cabins involved kayaking, canoeing, and flying on float planes around the Tongass National Forest. After spending three months working and fishing on Prince of Whales Island she moved to Washington, D.C., for an internship with Colorado's Senator Mark Udall. There she has been working with the Senators Legislative Counsel on environmental policy and future alternative energy strategies.
