I coordinate and instruct in the Wilderness and Civilization program, a two-semester immersion program for undergraduates housed in the College of Forestry and Conservation. Wilderness and Civilization combines field studies of Montana’s wilderness and working landscapes with classes on campus that span ecology, policy, literature, and Native American Studies. There are 25 students in the program each year, a small group that is able to integrate across coursework and field experiences throughout the year. The classes I teach within the program explore the interface of wildland protection and community conservation. I enjoy introducing students to people with different perspectives, including innovative landowners, conservation advocates, land managers, and tribal leaders. I also like arranging internships and service projects for Wilderness and Civilization students, which give them opportunities to work in the community and in their field of interest.
Before coming to the University of Montana, I developed and taught field education programs throughout the Rocky Mountain States, Mexico, and Canada, and taught for the Wild Rockies Field Institute, Prescott College, and the Colorado Outward Bound School. I recently developed a summer course about climate change, energy policy, and alternative energy production in which students cycle 700 miles across the state. Montana provides a great many opportunities to study the connections between natural resources and human communities. The people and places are remarkably accessible to us as faculty and students.
