Bridget Dobrowski Santa Barbara, CA – Bridget Dobrowski, a first-year master’s student at the Donald Bren School of Environmental Science & Management at the University of California, Santa Barbara, has been awarded a Jean and Barry Schuyler Prize for 2007-2008. Bridget earned her BS in Resource Conservation and a minor in Drama in 2003 from the University of Montana. Prior to enrolling at Bren, she was an agricultural Water Quality Coordinator with the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary in Monterey, Calif., and a Biological Science Technician with the Zion National Park Service in Springdale, Utah. Forty-seven students were awarded donor-named fellowships and prizes for this academic year. These student recipients are among the most outstanding members of their class. Their admission to, and acceptance of, candidacy at the Bren School were due in part to donors who provided the margin of excellence that enabled the Bren School to compete successfully with other top programs in the nation for these superb candidates.

Donor Arent H. “Barry” Schuyler was among the faculty who founded the UC Santa Barbara Environmental Studies Program in 1970 and was its chair for four years. Barry received a BA in Chemistry from Caltech, an MS in biology from UCSB, and a PhD in Environmental Studies and Engineering from UCLA. Retired after twenty years at UCSB, his current research interests include the hazards and risks of oil and marine operations in the Santa Barbara Channel. Barry has been President of the Trustees of the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and is currently Chairman of the Board of the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum.

Jean Schuyler received her BA from Stanford University and has served on the Board of Directors of Planned Parenthood, the Santa Barbara Foundation, United Way, Shelter Services of Women, and the PARC Foundation. Jean was named Woman of the Year by the Santa Barbara Foundation and KEYT in 1997, and currently serves with her husband as Co-chair of the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum capital campaign. The Bren School is a unique interdisciplinary graduate program focused on solving environmental problems through the integration of science, management, law, economics, and policy. The school provides rigorous training for master’s and Ph.D. students and plays a leading role in researching environmental issues. This program is unique in the UC system and is the only one of its kind in the western United States.
