Scholarships

CFC Scholarships

Last year, the College awarded over 70 scholarships worth over $88,000.  Money for scholarships has been donated by former students, former professors, friends and family members, and people who are concerned about the environment.  When you submit your scholarship application, you will be considered for all scholarships that you are eligible to receive.  The criteria for each scholarship will vary depending on the donor's request.

Travel, Research, and Education Experience (TREE) Grant Program for Students in Wildland Fire Science and Management

The Association for Fire Ecology (AFE) and the Joint Fire Sciences Program (JFSP) are offering grants from $250 to $1,500 to fund student travel to fire-related conferences, symposia, workshops, and laboratories.  These competitively-awarded grants will fund direct travel costs for transportation, lodging, registration fees, and printing or preparation of presentation materials (e.g. posters, maps, audio-visual materials).  Both graduate and undergraduate students are eligible.

Whitebark Pine Student Research Grant

WPEF will be offering a research grant of $1000 to an undergraduate who is writing an undergraduate thesis or graduate student (MS or PhD) conducting research on whitebark pine.  Grant recipients are encouraged to present the findings of their research at the 2014 WPEF annual meeting and are expected to publish a summary of the research in Nutcracker Notes.  In addition to the proposal, applications should include a CV as well as a letter of recommendation from the student’s research advisor.

Wyss Scholars Program for the Conservation of the American West

The Wyss Foundation is a private, charitable foundation dedicated to land conservation in the
Intermountain West.  The Wyss Scholars Program seeks to identify and nurture a new generation of
leaders on western land conservation issues by providing financial support to Master’s degree students
who are committed to careers as practicing conservationists of western land, primarily with a federal or state land management agency or a non-profit conservation group working in the region.  Student enrolled in the following participating programs/departments are eligible to apply: 

  • College of Forestry and Conservation
  • Communication Sciences Department
  • Division of Biological Sciences
  • Environmental Studies Program
  • Geography Department
  • History Department
  • Political Science Department
  • School of Business Administration
  • School of Law

Phil Tawney Hunters Conservation Endowment Scholarship of the Montana Wildlife Federation

Established in 1998, the Endowment honors the late Phil Tawney, a fourth generation Montanan, lifetime sportsman and conservation leader.  Reflecting Tawney’s passion and commitment to protecting Montana fish and wildlife habitat and the future of hunting, the Endowment seeks to “educate and inform the general public about hunting ethics, fair chase and values; to perpetuate the sport of the hunt through efforts to conserve habitat and wildlife; and to stimulate the recruitment, mentoring and involvement of youth in hunting and conservation activities.”

Summer Field Projects in Climate Change and Natural Resources

The College of Forestry and Conservation in conjunction with the Climate Change Studies program is pleased to announce a competitive grants program to support undergraduate student summer fieldwork. Funding is available through a USDA Higher Education Challenge grant designed to support the training of leaders in climate change and natural resources through experiential and field-based learning. Three awards are available, each up to $3,000, to support student stipends related to fieldwork.

Alaback and Brewer Melipal Fellowship

The Alaback and Brewer Melipal Fellowship supports undergraduate or graduate research and public education focused on conservation and sustainable development in Latin America.  Resource Conservation students who wish to work in Chile or Argentina are given priority, but the award is available to students in any CFC degree program working on these topics anywhere in Latin America.

Irene Evers’ Competitive Undergraduate Research Scholarships

The College of Forestry and Conservation is pleased to issue a call for proposals for the Irene Evers’ Competitive Undergraduate Research Scholarships (IECURS).  To be eligible for an IECURS, a student must be an undergraduate of at least sophomore standing and must be enrolled in a degree program in the College of Forestry and Conservation at the University of Montana for the fall semester following the award.  The applicant must possess a GPA of 3.2 or higher.

Phillip L. Wright Memorial Research Award

Philip L. Wright was a professor of zoology at The University of Montana who taught mammalogy and
ornithology and established the zoological museum that bears his name.  In remembrance of Dr. Wright and his contributions to science and the community, the Five Valleys Audubon Society established the annual Philip L. Wright Memorial Research Awards.  These awards provide support for students undertaking research in the fields of ecology, wildlife biology, animal behavior, environmental biology, and conservation biology.  Research awards have been in the range of $200 to $1,000.

Interested students should consult with Dr. Dan Pletscher, Wildlife Biology Program, about the content of their application.

Zuuring/MAGIP GIS Scholarship (first-year graduate students)

The Hans Zuuring and Montana Association of Geographic Information Professionals (MAGIP) GIS Scholarship at The University of Montana is a companion to the MAGIP GIS Scholarship awarded by the Montana Association of Geographic Information Professionals.  The selection process is coordinated through a GIS Scholarship Committee consisting of the UM Steering Committee for the Certificate in GIS Sciences and Technologies, and one other faculty or industry representative.  Each year a one thousand dollar ($1,000) award shall be made to a recipient selected by the GIS Scholarship Committee.  The recipient must be a first-year graduate student in good standing, may be in any discipline, and must be working on a project that uses GIS as part of their thesis or dissertation research.  Financial need may be used as a secondary criterion but selection shall be weighted more heavily on the strength of the thesis research and proposal.  An individual may receive the award one time only.

Bertha Morton Graduate Fellowships and Scholarships

Bertha Morton was a Helena, Montana native who worked most of her adult life for the Internal Revenue Service in Helena.  She was not an alumnus of The University of Montana, nor did she actually attend any university.  She worked hard and saved her money.  When she died in 1977, she left a large part of her estate to the UM Foundation because she desired to encourage and help serious students obtain an education here.  Bertha Morton fellowships and scholarships have subsequently become our most prestigious awards for graduate students.  For the 2012-2013 academic year, each fellowship will carry an award of $5000 and each scholarship will carry an award of $3000.

Journal of Environmental Investing Scholarship

The Journal of Environmental Investing Scholarship Program will award $3,500 to the graduate student who writes the most original and rigorous manuscript on a topic related to environmental investing (such as environmental science, policy or law, sustainability, finance, economics, and public affairs and policy) are invited to present ideas and research.

Truman D. Picard Scholarship Program

To honor Truman D. Picard, the Intertribal Timber Council (ITC) established a scholarship program in his name.  Truman served on the ITC Board of Directors from 1982 to 1985.  While working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs he attended the Forest Engineering Institute at Oregon State University becoming one of the first people from the agency to complete this program.  The Truman D. Picard Scholarship Program is dedicated to the support of Native American/Alaskan students pursuing a higher education in Natural Resources.

Dennis R. Washington Native American Fellowship

The Fellowship upholds Dennis Washington's long time vision of promoting the betterment of society and the development of a highly diverse workforce through education.  There will be one fellowship awarded which will consist of:  $10,000 stipend; designation as a research or teaching assistant; eligibility for Montana Native American Fee Waiver.  The University of Montana can choose whether or not to renew the Fellowship after the first year (maximum 2 years for a Master's program and 3 years for a Ph.D. program).

Eligibility requirements:

  • Applicants must be accepted to a Master's or Doctoral degree program at the Graduate School of The University of Montana or Montana State University (no law degree or medical related field, including pharmacy)
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5 for undergraduate and 3.0 during any graduate program work
  • Graduate from a 4-year regionally accredited institution of higher learning anywhere in the United States
  • Montana resident
  • Enrolled member of a Montana Indian Tribe

Clancy Gordon Environmental Scholarship

The Clancy Gordon Environmental Scholarship provides one award in the amount of $2,000 and is available to all graduate students from the biological, physical, and social sciences and environmental studies at The University of Montana.  Applicants must demonstrate ability and effectiveness in applying scientific knowledge towards the resolution of environmental problems.  Registration at The University of Montana during the 2013-2014 academic year is required.  Previous recipients are not eligible.

  • One-page statement of activities in environmental problems

The Cave Conservancy Foundation - Fellowships in Karst Studies

The Cave Conservancy Foundation is planning to award a yearly Undergraduate Fellowship in Karst Studies for $5,000, an M.S. Graduate Fellowship in Karst Studies for $5,000, and a Ph.D. Graduate Fellowship in Karst Studies for $15,000. Any study of caves and karst in any field, including but not limited to archeology, biology, engineering, geography, geology, and social sciences will be considered. The research can involve any cave and karst areas, including those outside the United States. Applicants must be full-time graduate or undergraduate students at a U.S. college or university.
