HOW THE BEST PREPARE FOR THE WORST
Aerie Backcountry Medicine is offering a wilderness-skills semester in Costa Rica and Northwestern Montana.  Participants will earn professional-level certifications in wilderness medicine (Wilderness EMT), swiftwater rescue (Swiftwater Rescue Technician), avalanche rescue (Level 1 Avalanche), and Leave No Trace Trainer with additional training in search and rescue, winter survival, tropical survival, and wilderness risk management.  Students will live at an organic farm and sustainable living center, Rancho Mastatal, and the Pacuare River in Costa Rica in February, and in Northwest Montana in March, 2010.

Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness First Responder Refresher
January 11-20, 2010

Aerie’s 72 hour WFR course is designed for outdoor professionals and outdoor enthusiasts,
preparing them to care for injuries and illness in remote, challenging environments.

Cost $795 includes meals and lodging.

Wilderness EMT  

May 17 - June 13, 2010
West Glacier, Montana

Aerie's most intense course, the Wilderness EMT is our highest level of Wilderness Medicine training available. This 190+ hour course follows the Department of Transportation's National Registry EMT curriculum, but goes into significantly more detail concerning care for patients in remote settings. This course is ideal for outdoor leaders involved in extended backcountry trips, those individuals seeking employment with ambulance services, search and rescue units, and ski patrols, but is also appropriate for outdoor enthusiasts wanting the best training available.

After successful course completion, students take the National Registry EMT-Basic exam.  Students must pass the national EMT-B exam to receive the Aerie W-EMTcertificate. Successful students will also receive American Heart Association Healthcare  Provider CPR certification.
