National Bison Range Elk Count

Each year, The Wildlife Society is invited to the National Bison Range near Moiese, MT to participate in a big game count. Starting in 2008, the Bison Range changed the count from an overall big game count to solely an elk count. The data from these counts are used to look at trends in the animal populations on the refuge over time. Animals commonly seen on these trips include elk, bison, white-tailed and mule deer, pronghorn, bighorn sheep, and black bears.
