Required Courses

Students are required to take a minimum of 12 credits of coursework and 3 credits for an internship to complete the certificate. Students must choose at least one course listed under Theory and Experience, one Activity course, and one Field Course. The remaining credits can be chosen from any of the courses listed below.

Theory and Experience (must choose at least 1 course)

  • PTRM 217:  Wildland Recreation Management (Autumn or Spring, 3 credits)
  • PTRM 380:  Recreation Administration and Leadership (Spring only, 3 credits)
  • NRSM 373:  Wilderness and Civilization (only if in W &C) (Autumn only, 3 credits)
  • GBLD 220:  Models of Leadership (Spring only, 2 credits)
  • PSCI 462:  Human Resource Management (3 credits)
  • HTH 465:  Leading Health and Human Organizations (3 credits)
  • COMX 210: Small Group Communication (3 credits)

Activity Course (must choose at least 1 course)

  • ACT 177:  Fundamentals of Kayaking (Autumn or Spring, 1 credit)
  • ACT 114:  Fundamentals of Rock Climbing (Autumn or Spring, 1 credit)
  • ACT 175:  Fly Fishing (Autumn only, 1 credit)
  • ACT 176:  Whitewater Rafting (Spring only, 1 credit)
  • ACT 114:  Indoor Rock Climbing (Autumn or Spring, 1 credit)
  • ACT 214:  Intermediate Rock Climbing (Spring only, 1 credit)
  • ECP 102:  Wilderness First Aid (SELL, 1 credit)
  • ECP 331:  Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician (SELL, 3 credits)
  • ECP 122:  Wilderness First Responder (SELL, 2 credits)

*Note that if a student has an up-to-date certification, it can count towards the credit requirement for the certificate.

Field Courses (must choose at least 1 course)

  • PTRM 355:  Wild. Med. and Risk Mgmt. (SELL, 5 credits)
  • PTRM 356:  Wild. Rescue and Survival (SELL, 5 credits)
  • PTRM 345:  Sustaining Human Soc. And Nat. Environment; study abroad trip to Zambia & Botswana (Spring only, 3-6 credits)
  • NRSM 273:  Missouri River Field Studies (Spring only, 1 credit)
  • NRSM 273:  Wild. & Civ. Field Studies (only if in W &C) (Fall only, 2 credits)
  • NRSM 374:  Yellowstone Field Course (Spring only, 1 credit)
  • PTRMXXX:  Independent Study: Professional Field Experience (Autumn or Spring, 2 credits)

Internship (3 total credits)

Internships require a minimum of 140 hours and are open to all students with an override approval form.

Students will be required to do an internship where they can apply their leadership skills with a professional partner. Internships can include on-campus initiatives like the Freshman Wilderness Experience and other student-led trips as well as off-campus internships with local, regional, or global partners. Internships will be approved by the coordinating committee and will be tracked through the W.A. Franke College of Forestry and Conservation. If a student has completed an internship or work experience in the past year that meets the requirements of the certificate’s internship required, the student will be required to complete a paper, but the previous professional experience can count towards the internship requirement.
